A social group, Royal Galaxy Club, on Friday donated food items,
electronic gadgets and other household materials worth about N5m to
children and patients of the SOS Children’s Village, Owu Ijebu and Ijebu
Igbo General Hospital, Ogun State respectively.
The items were ceiling fans, water dispensers, mattresses, bags of
rice, bed-sheets, wall clocks, mosquito nets, refrigerators,
televisions, noodles and other food items.
The 20-member club, which includes a former lawmaker, who represented
Ijebu Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Wale
Ogunbanjo, handed over the materials to the authorities of the
children’s village and the hospital as part of the activities marking
its 25th anniversary.
The Chairman of the club, Olasubomi Odunsi, said the choice of the
two public institutions was informed by the need to come to the aid of
the less privileged who were in dire need of support.
Odunsi added that the gesture was part of the fulfillment of the club’s desire to give back to the society.
Receiving the donations, the Director, SOS Children’s Village, Mr.
Anthony Inusa-Ahmed, expressed delight and commended the members of the
club for their gesture.
Ahmed stressed that the donation would go a long way in encouraging
both the children and the management of the village that there was still
hope for the centre despite its numerous challenges.
The village, Ahmed said, had over a hundred children and 58 other
persons which make it the centre with the highest population amongst the
three others located in Isolo, Lagos, Gwagwalada in Abuja and Jos,
Plateau State.
He said, “When I assumed office here a year ago, I had thought this
village would close down because what I met on ground was not
encouraging.
“On the other hand, I felt it was a challenge for me to reach out to
people to come to our aid. But since then, a lot of individuals and
organisations have been coming here to assist us both financially and
materially.”
Also, a Consultant with the Ijebu Igbo General Hospital, who
represented the Permanent Secretary, Ogun State Hospitals Management
Board, Dr. Olugbenga Oyefeso, implored other organisations in Ijebu land
to emulate the Royal Galaxy Klub.
Oyefeso said it was impossible for the government alone to provide
all the needs of such institutions because of the limited resources as
its disposal.
